A Review Based on Evidence And Rational Thought

What you are reading here is my original review of Right Size Smoothie.

Have you seen the TV commercials for Right Size Smoothie? If y
es, you may have been intrigued by the claims that these smoothies contain an “all-natural, appetite suppressant clinically proven to knock out hunger”. I know I was and that is why I decided to do some digging and see if there was any scientific proof for using this product over say, making your own smoothie.

Generally, I like the idea of using a smoothie to help curb appetite. Smoothies, if made correctly, tend to be light and buoyant. This means that they tend to fill you up while not containing many calories. This part about being “low calorie” is critical for any smoothie.

Weight loss boils down to one thing and one thing only - cutting calories. Any smoothie that is not low in calories is not going to help with weight loss. To their credit, Right Size Health and Nutrition (the company that makes Right Size smoothie and other products) actually mentions this fact on their website rightsizeonline.com and quote a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a well respected peer-review medical journal that shows weight loss is more about calories than carbs, protein or fat intake.

Each Right Size Smoothie contains about 100 calories per scoop (29 grams or about 1 oz) so, it’s fairly low in calories.

Also, to the credit of the company, they point out that:
1. There is no “magic bullet” for weight loss
2. That weight loss is a “personal journey” and…
3. That there is no “one size fits all program”

I like statements like these because they are in line with the facts.

So, what can we say about these smoothies? What follows is what I could dig up on the product and, as far as I know, this is one of the first unbiased reviews of Right Size Smoothie.

At the company website, I discover that the active ingredient is a product called Appemine. You must remember that while the word, Appemine, sounds like a drug, it is not.

Rather, Appemine is a name the company has given to its proprietary blend of ingredients. I know this is true because when I searched the National Library of Medicine (pubmed.com) for the word “Appemine” no studies were found that contained the word Appemine. Also, when I did a Google search for “Appemine” the only stuff that came up had to do with Right Size Smoothies. That tells me, the company created the name. There is nothing wrong with this, it’s just marketing.

As an aside, I’ve always found it interesting that people who take supplements tend to be very much opposed to taking prescription medications; yet, supplement companies sometimes give their products drug-like sounding names. I guess this a way to boost consumer confidence? In other words, if it sounds like a drug, people may think the FDA has reviewed it for effectiveness? I'm not sure and this is just an observation on my part. Take it for what it is.

Appemine is not a single product but is actually composed of the following ingredients, according to the company’s website:

• Gguarana,
• Fiber
• Cinnamon twig
• Ggalangal root
• Cayenne pepper fruit
• White willow bark
• 50 mgs of caffeine

I'm going to assume that the ingredients are listed in order of greatest quantity to lowest since that is how things are usually listed on food labels. If my assumption is correct, then guarana is found in the highest amount, followed by fiber, cinnamon twig, and so on.

Now that we know this, let’s review the weight loss evidence for these ingredients individually: This is the only way we have to determine if Appemine works because, to my knowledge, there is no peer-reviewed evidence published for Appemine itself. The company’s website mentions “our research” of Appemine but does not list where the research is published. A “pilot study” (preliminary study) is also mentioned about how good Appemine is but again, nowhere can we read where that study is published.

So let’s now review the peer –reviewed clinical evidence for the ingredients of Appemine and see what we can determine about how good it might be:

Guarana: This is a caffeine containing plant that shows up frequently in weight loss products. There is at least one study that guarana can help weight loss but it’s in combination with other products (not found in Right Size Smoothie). I found no peer-reviewed studies showing that guarana alone (or in combination with other ingredients in Appemine) is effective for weight loss. Nevertheless, caffeine may make people feel more awake (it does!) and a more awake person may do more physical activity, which burns more calories. That makes sense to me.

The website also says that Right Size products contain 50 mg of caffeine. It’s not clear from the website if this 50 mg of caffeine is in addition to the caffeine contained in guarana or not. Even though the website says Right Size smoothie products will not make you jittery, those who are sensitive to caffeine should be cautious.

Guarana is also known to interact with several medications so check with your doctor before using.

Fiber. It’s possible that fiber may help with weight loss because fiber contains no calories and fills people up. Right Size Smoothie mix contains about 5 grams of fiber per serving. That’s not a lot of fiber but every little bit helps I suppose.

Cinnamon twig. This is basically the spice cinnamon which some research (but not all of it) hints may help lower blood sugar levels. It turns out that most studies show that cinnamon does not lower blood sugar.

Cinnamon is generally considered safe but there is some concern that in high amounts it may damage the liver. I don’t think there is much cinnamon in Right Size Smoothie but to be safe, those with liver issues should see their doctor before using the product.

Galangal Root. This is a type of ginger. There is not much currently known about this herb and I could not find any peer reviewed studies supporting its use with weight loss.

Cayenne pepper fruit. Cayenne pepper contains Capsicum, which is the chemical that burns your mouth when you eat peppers. I'm guessing that cayenne was added to the product because of the theory that spicy foods might raise metabolic rate and help speed /promote weight loss. Whether or not this is true (I'm not convinced), I'm going to guess that the amount contained in Right Size Smoothies is not enough to do much good since cayenne is not listed as one of the top ingredients, meaning it may not contain much of this chemical.

In theory cayenne may interact with blood thinner medications but again I think the possibility of this is low. Still, get your doctors OK if you use blood thinner medications because they can be tricky to work with.

White Willow Bark. This is actually a compound that is related to the pain killer, aspirin. Specifically, white willow bark is metabolized to aspirin in the body. White willow bark frequently shows up in weight loss products because of a belief that it works synergistically with caffeine – and ephedrine.

Bodybuilders know this combination (or “stack” as bodybuilders call it) as “ECA” which stands for ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin. There is however no ephedrine in Right Size Smoothie (that’s good!). Ephedrine is a banned substance in America. I'm guessing they added white willow bark to the product because the company feels it will help weight loss even without ephedrine. I could not locate any proof one way or another on this.

Because aspirin is a known and potent blood thinner, people who are using blood thinner medications should see their doctor or pharmacist before using Right Size Smoothie. Even though there is probably very little white willow bark in the product, even a little may be enough to “over thin” the blood resulting in disastrous consequences. Likewise, those with kidney/liver issues should also speak their doctor and /or pharmacist first.

Persons sensitive to aspirin should avoid Right Size Smoothie. One case report exists where severe, life threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) occurred in a woman after using a supplement containing white willow bark.

Caffeine. Of all the ingredients in Appemine, caffeine has the most evidence for weight loss. The problem however is that most of the research is on the combination of caffeine + ephedrine (which is currently banned in America).
Also the research on caffeine (in combination with ephedrine) tends to use more than the 50 mg of caffeine found in Right Size Smoothie. For example, one study of caffeine (and ephedrine) used almost 200 mg! Caffeine would be expected to make a person more alert. As mentioned previously, this might lead to more physical activity performed and hence, more calories used.

Caffeine also has a mild fat burning effect. The fact that most studies combine caffeine with other products (like ephedrine) is a testament to its less than spectacular solo effect on weight loss.

Because Right Size Smoothies contain caffeine they should be avoided several hours before bed otherwise they may cause insomnia. Caffeine can also raise heart rate and blood pressure. Caffeine also can have multiple drug interactions so it’s always wise to consult your doctor and/or pharmacist before using any caffeine containing products.

Some have suggested that caffeine may be inappropriate for those with diabetes because of thoughts that it may make the body less able to respond to the hormone, insulin. This is admittedly, something that scientists have not fully worked out yet but I wanted to mention it just in case any diabetics were reading this.

Protein. While not touted on the website very much, Right Size Smootie mix contains about 9 grams of protein per serving. Protein might help curb appetite because it takes longer to be digested and we humans tend to work harder (metabolically speaking) to assimilate protein, which bumps up metabolism a little bit.

I was surprised to see only 9 grams per serving which is less than is in many other protein mixes out there. This might be a problem for some older adults who may not get enough protein in their diet. Older adults might gravitate to a drinkable protein shake because they may not process protein as effectively because of dentures as well as lack of stomach acid secretion.

Lack of protein can contribute to sarcopenia (loss of muscle that occurs as we get older) and other issues that can reduce the quality of life of older adults. I am, admittedly considering a worst case scenario but I wanted to mention it because as a personal trainer whose oldest “client” was my 104 year old grandmother, I’ve seen what happens when people do not eat enough calories and/or protein.

Because of the lack of calories and protein, Right Size Smoothie should not be used as a meal replacement by older adults whose goal is not weight loss.

Calories, Calories, Calories!

Ultimately it’s up to you if you want to try to Right Size Smoothie but consider this before buying. The website recommends replacing 2 meals a day with 2 smoothies. So, you could have a smoothie for breakfast and a smoothie for lunch and a regular dinner.

Each Right Size Smoothie has about 100 calories. Suppose you ate a dinner that was 1000 calories (which is a lot of calories by the way).

1000 calories for dinner
+

200 calories (from 2 smoothies)

= 1200 calories per day

That’s actually less calories than many people eat in a day!

So, are you losing weight because of anything magical about Appemeine or are you losing weight because you are eating fewer calories? Even the Right Size Smoothie website says it all boils down to calories in the end, so I think you have your answer.

We have heard this “replace one or two meals a day and eat a sensible dinner” statement before. This is the same reasoning used by Slim-Fast for their diet. Remember the “Special K Diet” where you eat a bowl of Special K cereal at breakfast and lunch and a regular dinner? Special K doesn’t have many calories either (unless you eat the whole box at once!).

I don’t mean to drag Slim-Fast or Special K through the mud. Rather I want to point out that others have used the same logic in the past. Slim Fast, Special K, Right Size Smoothie and others all work on the same premise: they get you to eat less calories. The rational is sound and will work. But what about after you go off the diet?

If by now you think I'm slamming Right Size Smoothie, technically I not. I just want to give you both sides of the argument and arm you with more information than you would get if you simply went to the website or watched the TV commercials.

I think if people do what the company recommends than yes, I'm pretty sure Right Size Smoothie will promote weight loss. The same is true for Slim-Fast, Special K, the Akins diet, the Cookie Diet, the Grapefruit Diet eating Subway sandwiches or any other calorie restriction regimen. I want people to understand that once they stop cutting calories and go back to eating like before, than the weight will come back very fast. One of the reasons for this is an elevation in an enzyme called glycogen synthase. This enzyme helps you store glycogen – your storage form of carbohydrates.

When you cut your calories, your body starts to use its glycogen to maintain its energy levels. To compensate, your body raises the concentration of the glycogen synthase enzyme so that when you eat normally again, glycogen is made very fast.

Glycogen loss will also help explain any quick weight loss you may see with the smoothie (or any other diet). As you deplete your glycogen levels, you free up a lot of water in your body. This is why you may have noticed frequent trips to the bathroom during the first several days of any diet.

Currently, Right Size Smoothie is just over $50 per container. Each container has 30 servings. So, if you make two Right Size Smoothies per day, a container will last you about two and a half weeks. That means, you’ll pay about $100 a month.

If price doesn't matter to you and your healthy then that’s fine. But if money matters, there are cheaper ways to make smoothies. In a future blog I’ll show you my own personal smoothie mix which is not only cheaper but has more protein and fiber and tastes great!

Before I end, I do want to quickly review a couple of other products I see on the Right Size Smoothie website.

1. Weight Loss Water. Generally speaking, water is water and has zero calories. The Weight Loss Water they are selling contains 50 mg of caffeine, 5 grams of fiber, some fish oil and other stuff reviewed above plus the mineral chromium picolinate which is useless for weight loss. Also this “slimming water” contains 15 calories. So it has more calories than tap water? How is that going to help? Any tap water or bottled water will be a better choice.

2. “Nutritional Supplements” At this time the Right Size Smoothie website lists several supplements that people can purchase. These currently include

a. A green tea supplement that contains Appemine

and

b. A multi-vitamin that contains Appemine.

Ok, here is the scoop on green tea. Drink the tea and forget the green tea supplements.

As for the multivitamin, how is it different than a cheapo vitamin from Wal-Mart? Has the multi vitamin been tested to see if it really curbs appetite? As far as I can see, it has not.

These supplements nothing more than added profit centers to help the company make more money. Now, let me be clear, I have nothing against capitalism. I hope everybody buys my books so I can help you learn more and make money in the process. My issue is when products are touted as being superior when there is no good proof to back it up. If you're going to choose just one product to use, stick to Right Size Smoothie and forget any other products sold.

My Thoughts

Based on rational thought and the evidence I could uncover, I draw these conclusions about Right Size Smoothie:

1. Appemine is a made up name and is not a drug or supplement. It is composed of several ingredients.

2. There is no peer-reviewed clinical evidence published on Appemine as an appetite suppressor in humans

3. The evidence in support of most of Appemines ingredients is either lacking or very little. At this time, there does not seem to be any published peer-reviewed evidence that the unique combination of ingredients in Appemine promotes weight loss in humans.

4. There appears to be no published peer-reviewed evidence in humans or animals that compares Right Size Smoothie any other weight loss product or drug proving that it is equal or superior at promoting weight loss.

5. Cutting calories by using of Right Size Smoothie – or any other low calorie meal replacement product - will likely promote weight loss.

6. Cheaper meal replacement products exist that will probably do the same thing.

7. The weight that is lost through Right Size Smoothie (or any other low calorie eating plan) is likely to return once the diet has stopped.

8. Consumers can probably due without using the added supplements marketed on the website.

Overall, I don’t think right size smoothie is bad. In comparison to most of the other weight loss products I see advertised today, the claims made for the product are tame and, as I said previously, I like how the makers of the product take the high road and discuss calories as the key to weight loss. I just don’t see any good proof that the ingredients in Right Size Smoothie are superior to anything else. Considering the price of the product, I want to see published peer-reviewed proof that Right Size Smoothie does what it’s supposed to do. Testimonials are not enough for me and they should not be for you either. Demanding published, peer reviewed proof (even if it’s conducted by the maker of the product) is the only way we will know whether a nutritional supplement really works.

  2. I do enjoy right size smoothie...it tastes good and it really does seem to keep me full, however it is pretty expensive! I would love to know some shakes you can make at home that would still curve my appetite! Thanks for having a blog that seems to just say it as it is!

  3. Hi Mandy thanks for the comments

I make smoothies almost every day. if you have a blender try this, its what I do:

Add the following to your blender in this order
    1 orange (pealed)
2.couple of frozen strawberries (fresh works too)
    3. blueberries (1/4 cup at the most)
    4. 2 scoops oat meal (any kind)
    5. 1 cup water
Blend together and as blending add 1 scoop of protein powder (I like chocolate but its up to you).
    I also like this recipe
    1 orange
    2. 1/2 cup red grapes
    3. several baby carrots
    4. frozen strawberries
    5. blue berries
blend together without oatmeal or protein powder. Ive also added frozen spinach and/ or frozen broccoli to this for added nutrition

I use a Vita-mix for my smoothies but any blender should work too.

    hope that helps :)

Hi Joe - what kind of protein powder do you use? I like smoothies, but I have trouble finding a protein powder that actually tastes good... Most of them have a weird after taste.

    Thanks!

  5. Hi Christy. I currently use chocolate muscle milk. its higher in calories (so use only 1 scoop) but taste very good. I also like chocolate myoplex and Met-rx powder. Individual taste does matter the most so you may have to do some experimenting before you find one that you like.

  9. Hi Holly Im glad I was able to help you. the calories in my smoothie will depend on how much fruit you use and the type of protein but its usually around 350 calories when I make it. if you use frozen fruit they tell you the calories and you can get that from the oatmeal also if you use that. the protein powder is the biggest part of the calories so check the health food store for which has the most protein per scoop and the least calories.

Hi Joe. Found your reviews on right size smoothies and I wanted to give you my feedback. I bought a container of it to the tune of about $65.00. I used it for 2 weeks (twice a day). I really didn't lose any weight and I was completely disappointed to find out that there was really not much of an appetitie suppressant effect for me. I just stay hungry. I'm 46 and totally struggling with losing weight. My metabolism has definitely slowed down. Medication I take also contributes to a slower metabolism...ugh! I am not overweight, but would like to drop 10 to 15 pounds (20 ideally). I exercise intermittently. I'm not an exercise freak. I do walk 5 days a week, but not always rigorously. I found your information helpful and will not waste my money again. Also, I tried your smoothie recipe this morning...it's okay. I would like to taste more of the chocolate. It will take a little getting use to, but is very healthy with the fruit and oatmeal. I may use skim milk instead of water for more protein. Thanks for your "dirt digging" on right size smoothies. My opinion is it's completely a waste of money. It's a shame that those company execs are getting rich off of people who are looking for a miracle. Shame on them.

  12. Thanks for the feed back and I'm glad you enjoyed my smoothie recipe. yes, as you said you may have to tweak it a bit to suit your tastes.
I understand struggles with weight but don't let it get you down. It's great your walking 5 days a week! You don't have to do vigorous walking to see results. The fact you're walking still means your healthier, regardless of weight loss. Focus on health and let the weight take care of itself.

I just got the product and thought it tasted terrible. In order to make it taste decent you have to add all kinds of sweet stuff like fruit or juice, which adds calories! Then with the "free trial" you pay 18.80 in shipping and handling and they send you two big containers, one of which you have to send back if you want out of the company...you pay the shipping! It is a complete waste of money, for a lousy product and a lousy company that didn't want to help me out on the shipping even though I complained. No on "Right Size"!!!

    Joe,
Thanks for your comments! I found this write up as I researching possible side effects for this product. I started drinking the Slenda-berry flavor about 2 weeks ago and love the flavor, however, I suddenly have high blood preasure readings over the past week. I think my increased blood preasure may be related to this product. I plan to discontinue it's use for a week and see what happens.

    Thanks again,

Joe.....Thanks so much for your informative blog about rightsize smoothies. I'm actually looking for a meal replacement smoothie that I can share with my 16yr. old daughter. We saw the ad about the smoothies.I Was impressed that it was going take no time at all to peel off the pounds . . In my search for the free trail order form, (which I never found ) I started to wonder why couldn't I try it free without spending $20 or more. Honestly , I still was going to buy it anyway. Then I remembered that my child has a food allergy so I begin. To research about these to good to be true smoothies. I'm glad I did. I will not be purchasing the right size smoothies after all, Especially with the the info you provided about them. Although natural the way they blended the ingredients together it can be harmful to some people. I'm looking for a more natural way for us to eat more healthy and lose weight. Also I will try your smoothies they sound a lot more appetizing than the latter.......

  28. I'm glad I was able to help you in your search for information on Right Size Smoothie. Experiment with my smoothie recipe to find what works for you. Ive been adding a handful cranberries to the mix lately and like the taste. Also, to cut down on the calories don't use any protein powder (or use a lower calorie brand). As a personal trainer I'm also going to recommend exercise. If people only diet (and do not exercise), about 50% of the weight that's lost is fat. the other 50% is muscle tissue (and other protein tissues). Muscle fibers do not return when they have been destroyed. When we exercise and diet, about 90% of the weight loss is fat. Even a 30 minute walk will help.
Good luck and thanks again for your kind words!

Your review has been very helpful! I found it when I was searching for the the side effects of the different ingredients Right size smoothie. I have been dealing with my weight ever since my third child was born. It has been extremely hard for me to take the weight off. It is very frustrating. Do you have any suggestions on any supplements that I can add to my workout plan that will help me get better results on my weightloss?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Im glad I was able to help you. Ive investigated supplements for over 10 years and when it comes to weight loss Im pretty disappointed with all of them. Are you exercising? few ideas for you that might help

    1. I know its hard when you have kids but research shows that the people most successful at weight loss exercised. if your just starting out, only do aerobic exercise like walking for the first month or so and after that do a total body circuit strength training program that uses light weights with higher numbers of reps (12-20 reps per exercise)

    2. eat breakfast. people lose the most weight when they eat breakfast

    3. if your looking for a smoothie scroll upward in the comments section and you'll see the smoothie recipe that I use.

    4. As I mentioned in the right size smoothie blog, what I did like about the website and product is that they did mention calories. just cutting out a few (200 calories per day) calories from your daily eating pattern will eventually cause weight loss. Dont lose more than 1-2 pounds per week (the first week you may lose more than this but that's mostly water)

    5. write down what and when you eat. Research shows that the people who lose the most weight write down daily what they eat.

    6. if your insurance covers it, try a consultation with a registered dietitian. they could make an eating plan for you that has only the calories you need to achieve your goal

I hope this helps. Give it time , be patient, and don't fall for those reality shows that show massive weight loss in a week. thats not realistic or healthy. Trust me.

I am doing some research for my husband. He travels for work and finds himself going to fast food for convenience. He was on a program through our local hospital that promoted the "New Direction" diet. He was successful. However, part of the program was that he had to go to counseling once a week. He struggled going since the only time he had was Saturday's and had to stop going because of different things, traveling to visit family, kids basketball games, etc. With the Christmas holiday, he has since gained most (Christmas parties, taking clients to lunch etc.) of the weight back and is looking for something different. Can you recommend a product/program that is easy for him to fix while on the road? I like the idea of your smoothie, but I have 3 kids, and don't have the time or patience to fix that for him in the am, plus, those ingredients are not accessible while he his on the road.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

  32. There are many low low calorie protein shakes at the health food store that he could use. Myoplex light is one that tastes good. I believe "ABB" (American bodybuilding) is another with only about 240 calories per 12 oz can. If possible mix the contents with an equal amount of water. this will increase the volume and help him stay full a little longer. Ill try to get tot he health food store this weekend and post some of them for you here.

I've been trying the right size smoothies and lost 30lbs. I usually just replace 1 meal a day. I'm just doing it slowly. But the funny thing is I did the two week trail and they send a coupon to get the powder and already made up shake at CVS the only place that carries it. It a smaller container but it ends up being a little cheaper. So if you do want to do that might help on costs that's what I've been doing. But loved this blog about Appemine.

I sent the last comment didn't know how to leave Google ID sorry do you have a link to recipes to low calorie smoothies that you recommend? Renee

  36. Hi Renee
I don't have link to the recipes I like but that's something to think about. Others have asked me for this also. Try the one I mentioned above I like it a lot. I'm also adding cranberries to the mix now and that gives it a different flavor I like :)

    Hi Joe
Do you have any comments with regard to soy based products and thyroid diseases? I haver Hashimotos and cannot take soy based products as soy suppresses thyroid hormone production. I can certainly tell if I consumme too much soy- my hair falls out. To my point, Ihave found very few smoothies and/or protein drinks available without soy and have not had much luck with them for dietary purposes.

Can you tell me a little more about Muscle milk? Thanks.... Karen

    ReplyDelete
  38. Have you seen an endocrinologist? I'm guessing you have seen a medical doctor since you mentioned Hashimotos. I have seen some research that soy lowers thyroid only in those who have low iodine levels but don't quote me (an endocrinologist can tell you best)

There are many protein powders that don't contain soy. I know if you go to the health food store, the staff can point you to them. Then its just a matter of finding which one you like best.

I only mentioned Muscle Milk because it tastes good and does not clump up when I microwave it with oatmeal. It is a little higher in calories (1 scoop =150 calories) compared to other brands.

I have to agree with you Joe, the key to weight loss is calories in vs. calories out. This is just another expensive product claiming that you can lose 10lbs in 2 weeks. I doubt it, a healthy weight loss is 2-3 lbs per week (for women). I just saw this guy advertising his product on the Arizona early morning show. This makes people believe unrealistic results and these products are not even FDA regulated. Another good point you brought up, is the ingredients that can interact with people's meidcations. Being a nurse I am constantly educating people about herbals and that they need to tell their MD and pharmacist everything they take. Thanks for the info. P.S> I also make my own smoothies and use protein powder which is way cheaper, I just drink them as a replacement after my workout.

  40. Thanks Andrea I'm glad you found my review helpful and also happy to have the feedback of someone in the health care system.

My husband and I both tried the right size smoothies. I replaced breakfast and dinner and had salad for lunch. My husband replaced breakfast. We did this for 3 months. No weight loss at all. My husband works out 5 days a week. I am hit and miss with exercise. But the kicker is really that the customer service is awful. When I questioned what one rep said which was the opposite of another rep, she became rude. I asked for a manager and the rep hung up on me. I sent the sales area an email. The return caller left a message saying I must have misunderstood and that the rep put me on hold meaning she did not hang up on me. This was incorrect. Customer service is a big deal to me and this org is very bad at it. Thanks for the good info you provided. I will try your recipe.

  42. Wow! I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with their customer support but very grateful that you shared those insights with the readers of my blog.
The good news that you can be thankful for is that even though you didn't lose any weight, because you exercised you are still healthy than if you did not exercise. That's what the research proves. Tell your husband to keep working out and that you will be joining him too :)
read though the other comments also. Ive posted some other tips that I hope help you.

  48. Yes Ive heard of it. As I understand it, it contains chromium, calcium, garcinia cambogia, green tea and caffeine. most of these ingredients has very little proof. those with the most proof are green tea (which has caffeine) and caffeine itself. Read my blog on Jillian Michaels Maximum Fat Burner supplement for more info on caffeine

Right Size is now sold at Meijer stores. I have used it for the past 2 years mainly as a substitute for breakfast since I usually running out the door. I feel it at least gives me a start to the day I wouldn't otherwise have. I always mix mine with 2% milk and actually enjoy the taste very much. Using it twice a day resutled in a reasonable weight loss.

I recently purchased the right size smoothie and am not impressed with it. Its tastes horrible and does very little for me with curbing my appetite...I'm still within my 30 days so I am going to ship it back, its not worth the over the $100 I paid for it....I have better results with slim fast and its much cheaper!!!! I have the berry and the chocolate flavors...

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thank you for your comments. if you use slim fast (or other protein shakes) try diluting it with some water. This will increase the volume you drink and may help it stay with you a little longer

I purchased the "free" trial of Rightsize Smoothies for the mere fact that it claimed "hunger control". Appemine was their claim, but it did not work for me. It's funny how they don't mention this on their website, but the cannister of the smoothie powder states, "drink an 8 oz glass of water after drinking the smoothie". That seemed strange to me, but makes sense since water gives you a sense of fullness. After drinking the smoothie, the last thing I wanted to do was drink a glass of water. The Appemine claim is totally a mimic. Of course you are going to feel full after downing a smoothie and drinking a glass of water, but it DOES NOT CURB YOUR HUNGER like it claims. I used the Slim Fast shakes after using RightSize, and they work exactly the same, taste much better, and cost alot less! It all comes down to reducing calories, burning more than you take in, and having mind control over your hunger. Not an easy thing to do, but it is the most proven way to lose weight. Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh really! I was not aware that they wanted people to drink a glass of water after drinking a shake. Thanks for letting me know!

Seems to me, those of you who don't exercise while you are on a diet, can't provide any valid feedback to anyone. Walking is hardly exercising, but it is the least possible effort of exercising next to sitting. You must work your muscles (sweat) to energize your metabolism. Right size smoothies will probably work if you eat 6 times a day, as you should be on a diet, and replace 2 of those 6 meals with that 100 calorie shake. Also, those of you who plan on making your own shakes, that's good, but realistically, how many times are you actually standing in your kitchen when you need to blend a shake? I can only make one a day. Can't find time in the morning to blend and carry to work. My favorite smoothie:

    Peanut Butter Smoothie: (protein heavy)
    1 cup Milk 2%
1/2 cup vanilla Yogurt (or honey Greek yogurt)
    1 scoop protein powder
1 tbsp flax seed oil (or 2 tbsp of flaxseeds)
    2 tbsp Peanut Butter
    1 Banana and/or
1/2 cup frozen fruit (best is blue, black, and raspberry frozen combo.

Change the fruit around: fresh mango... frozen strawberries...

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anonymous5:13 AM

Those of you who don't exercise while dieting just give useless feedback to the rest of us. You starve yourself and do nothing to speed your metabolism and shockingly you don't loose weight!!! Walking is hardly exercise, but is the least amount of muscle effort other than sitting and breathing. For Pete's sake, at least walk! Right Size smoothies have to work if you eat 5 to 6 meals a day and replace 2 meals with the smoothie. Don't count on making home-made smoothies regularly unless you actually do make one a day before work, then when you get home. I only manage one a day. I invested in Right Size smoothies for this reason, simplicity (but will add protein like Joe suggests). My favorite smoothie...

    Peanut Butter Smoothie, protein rich
    1 cup 2% Milk
1/2 cup Greek Honey Yogurt (or vanilla yogurt)
    1 scoop protein powder
1 tbsp flaxseed oil (or 2 tbsp flaxseeds)
2 tbsp Peanut Butter (Private Selection all natural
    1 banana and/or
1/2 cup frozen fruit, (best is blue, black, and raspberry whole frozen mix).
Try fresh Mango's, frozen strawberries, frozen cherries, change it around often.

    Hope this recipe helps

The problem for me was always feeling hungry after a meal. RightSize Smoothies actually do work for me, because they keep me full without all the sugar and calories of regular smoothies.

However, that aside, I commend you on the information and unbiased review you have here.

What people need to understand is, there really is not a magic weight-loss program out there, they all have their flaws. I personally find that RightSize Smoothies provides good compromise for me, unlike other plans I've tried, such as Nutrisystem.

I think the trick here is knowing your own body and being able to make the decision about whether or not this plan will work for you.

My favorite smoothie recipe that I just started replacing breakfast with (about 200 calories), I obtained it from eDiets and tweaked it a little:

1/3 cup of nonfat or lowfat plain yogurt
    1 banana
    1 cup of nonfat milk
    2 ice cubes
1/3 cup frozen strawberries (about 4)
    Splenda to taste

It is very light and filling. I am going to try these other recipes on here...they sound good too!

How refreshing to see someone actually write a review that says this product doesn't work, but click this link and try this because it's great. Thanks Joe you saved me some money as I heard the commercial today for the hundreth time and was gonna finally try it. I'm 350 and 55 years old. Problem is the knees hurt so bad, can't do much exercising till I get the weight down to a more managable level. Have tried many things, and did well with adkins, but it peaked, and got frustrated...I look at all of the diet pills to help, but there are just so many, and I've wasted so much money already to try and help lose the weight....I'm really open for any suggestions you or your readers may have....Thanks a bunch....jd

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hi JD thanks for your compliments I'm happy I could help you. I feel your frustration. Let me see if I can offer some help with 13 tips to help you lose weight.

    1. If you have not recently done get a check up from your doctor. explain to him/her your desire to lose weight and see if they can offer some suggestions.

    2. If your insurance covers it, consult a dietitian (RD) - not a "nutritionist". the website eatright.org lets you find an RD in your area. Find an RD who specialties in weight loss. I also want you to eat breakfast. The most successful people eat breakfast.

    3. Don't use any weight loss supplements. most are just expensive stimulants (read my review on Jillian Michaels Maximum Fat Burner as an example). I've investigated supplements for over 10 years. I've never seen a product that was both safe and effective. Most weight loss products do not work. Please trust me on this.

    4. most of the calories you burn in a day are used when your not exercising (when your watching tv, working, sleeping etc). Exercise is important but remember its more important to be stay the course when your not working out. that's when you burn the most calories!

    5. Since your knees hurt can you have access to a pool? when you are up to your chest in the water you are 80% lighter. you can get a very effective workout in the water. Look for local health clubs that have pools.

    6. if you dont have access to a water exercise class try workig out sitting in a chair. Many health clubs have arthritis exercise classes that take place when your sitting in a chair. Silver Sneakers is one such program and the arthritis foundation has a program also (It used to be called PACE - people with arthritis can exercise)

    7. You do not hvae to exercise a lot to make a difference. I DO NOT want you to exercise intensely like they do on the Biggest Looser.

    8. Have you considered weight watchers? The key to weight watchers is getting to meetings (or meeting in cyberspace) regularly. The regular interaction with other people is one of the main reasons that weight watchers is so successful

    9. tell your best friends you want to lose weight and get healthy and tell them you need their help when you get frustrated. They want to help you and they will. Just give them a chance.

    10. eat from smaller bowels and smaller plates. research proves this works for weight loss. One of my favorite books is "Mindless Eating" - its about the research of why we eat.

    11. Try weighing yourself every day. If your somebody who likes constant feedback this may be better than weighing yourself every week.

    12. Don't get frustrated. you make gains even when your sleeping! it takes a lot of calories to maintain 350 lbs. just cutting back 150 calories a day and your weight WILL start to drop.

    13. try not eating past 7pm or 8pm. that will cut back on the total calories you eat.

I hope some of this helps JD. Do keep me posted on your progress
    Joe

I've used Right Size before and I have to say I've never had any diet shake that tasted better, and it really worked well for me. As you point out though, there's nothing extraordinarily special about the concept -- it's just taking in fewer calories. Appemine is just marketing, but in addition to that you also get about 100% of many vitamins and minerals if you take 2 shakes per day. Once quick thing to mention though, the powder itself has 100 cal, but the directions suggest mixing it with milk which adds another 90 or so plus more protein and helps with hunger more. They say it can be mixed with water, but it's not really encouraged.

Joe, Thank you for writing such an informative, balanced review, I learned a lot from it and the Blog. I want to lose about 25 pounds and have taken thyroid meds for years because my thyroid is damaged. I am also a woman over 50, and a slow metabolism runs in my family making it very difficult to loose weight, although I have plenty of energy and stay very active.
I am just beginning the RightSize Smoothies program because I was looking for a fast, low-cal way to have a meal without having to stop and prepare one. I also want to cut calories for one or two meals thus keeping my (Dr. recommended) daily intake around 1200 - 1400. I love the idea of meal-replacement shakes in general and I found the RightSize chocolate shake delicious. I also wanted a product that did not contain any harsh chemicals or harmful drugs.
I like your idea of a lite protein powder so I’m going to try adding a scoop to the RightSize smoothie at lunchtime. I drink lots of plain seltzer water anyway and eat a healthy diet--just was eating too much of it. I also walk each day on the treadmill about 2.5 miles in 45 minutes, plus walk all day on the farm taking care of animals, cleaning barns, or gardening. I don't expect RightSize Smoothies to perform a miracle; I only expect it to be a convenient, good tasting, low-cal meal replacement and time saver. It can be made ahead of time and keeps me from eating the wrong thing if I’m away from home or "grazing around my kitchen" for lunch or a snack, wasting the day and going off task while adding lots of calories in the process. It was shocking to me how fast the calories can add up for any given meal! There are places on the web that have menu planning tools which count the calories in your day for you and show you where problem areas are lurking in your favorite foods, such as 360 calories in 6 TBs coffee cream!
So I am going to try RightSize, drink plenty of water, exercise daily, stay active, work on portion control, better food choices and healthy substitutions (like two cups of green tea instead of the half a pot of coffee with cream) and see what happens. The mineral supplement chromium does seem to help curb my craving for sweets and refined sugar which sometimes is my weakness but I don’t know if it works for every one. I think any success or failure experienced will be because of my choices and not because of a smoothie- its simply a tool in the whole process of weight control through habit reform and a strong desire to be healthier and feel better. A doctor once told me that the body can reset itself to lower weight if given enough time at the lower weight so my goal is to lose the 25 pounds and keep it off. I would appreciate any thoughts you might have to add. : )

  72. Thanks for taking the time to write all you have been doing. I do think you have approached Right Size Smoothie from the right perspective, making it a meal replacement and taking note -as Right Size Smoothie does on their website - that in the end of all boils down to calories. Since your doing all that you said, I'm pretty sure it will help you lose weight. In the end, there are many paths to weight loss. I hope this is the path that works for you :)

I JUST bought the trial to Right Size Smoothies. I googled and found your website after I placed the order, so after reading your blog and all the comments, I'm hoping for the best! LOL! I'm currently taking B12, Cinnamon, Chromium in addition to working out 5 days a week for about 45 minutes. I also do weight training 3 times a week as well. I've started on this journey many times before never quite making it to the finish line. I'm hoping this time will be different. Thank you so much for your information. I'll keep you posted with my Right Size Smoothie trial.

  76. Hi Dana. keep me posted on your progress. I like that your working out 5 days a week. That's good. I think I can save you some money on the other supplements. There really isn't a lot of proof that chromium, vitamin B 12 or cinnamon help weight loss. Here is another blog I wrote on Vitamin B 12 http://joe-cannon.blogspot.com/2009/11/do-vitamin-b12-shots-help-weight-loss.html
Ive reviewed the ingredients in many other weight loss supplements here also. search my blog. I know Ive discussed chromium and cinnamon also.
Regardless, it sounds like your doing very well. Don't get discouraged. We all fall down sometimes. the trick is to get back up - which it sounds like you are doing very well :)

    Good Day Joe,
I am 51 years young but overweight for 5 years now and I heard the Right Size Commercial on the radio. I was so excited by the marketing I pulled over in a parking lot and called a nd ordered from my cell phone costing me over $100. easy. When the containers arrived, I was excited and followed the instructions to a tee; the exact amount of yogurt or whatever additive for that particular flavored shake that was recommended. My bad cholesterol went so high that my Dr. put me on a low saturated fat diet or I would be on pills the next time it was checked if it didn't go down. The only thing I had changed was drinking Right Size instead of a meal and eating no 'goodies!' I was appalled to look at the lowest part of the jar of Right Size. Above it claims 0 Saturated fats and 0 cholesterol I didn't read any further than what was in the outlined area. BELOW the area it says total carbs 375 grams and saturated fat less than 25 grams. Now how can that be when there was none in the outline? I had to get extra bloodwork, stress out over all this and definately did not lose weight. It has been well over 30 days but I feel being that I have followed thier instructions and it did me harm plus cost money to say the least, very least they should do is return my money.
    Donna
PS If anyone has a contact number for someone in thier office I can speak to I would be much obliged.

    Helo Joe,
I do not have the figures of my cholesterol with me but my Dr. has them in my records. I had no mention of being put on cholesterol lowering pills until using this product. I cannot find a number unless you want to re-order and that's probably automated, I have looked at 50 sights for it. I am going back to my bank statement as I should be able to find it there. Since I stopped using Right Size my cholesterol is normal again. I have never had a problem with bad cholesterol prior to this, that is why I was so shocked. I will keep you posted as to the companies response. I am not even looking to be reimbursed for the tests or Dr. visits, just the cause of the problem and if they send me a pre-paid box, I'de gladly send the 3 cans back to them.
    Take care.

Thanks Joe, you just gave me a much needed reality check. In todays society we are geared to the attitude of I want it now and fast. It took a long time for me to put the weight on & will take even longer to take it off. Since my late 30's my weight has been a roller coaster. It seems that with each "decade" my body metabolism changes & the things I did to loose weight the decade before still works, but now I need to add more to it to keep working. You are correct in that there is no fast & magical way of loosing weight. The answer has always been & will continue to be...cut down on the calories,(smaller portions on your plate & eating slower is my key) choose from the basic food group, drink more water and EXERCISE! That being the major key in my reality. One has to have the mind set, the dedication & drive before any diet can work. Thanks for saving me from an implulse buy and reminding be that dieting is a life style change & not a quick fix smoothie.

Hello, my name is Patricia and I just recieved my trial of Rightsize via UPS on yesterday and I wish I'd seen of this information before I processed my order. Although I will be calling to cancel before my 14 days are up. To the woman that wanted to know if she can view the product in a store, some CVS pharmacy stores carry the rightsize. I didn't know this until I opened my box and they are dropped 3 coupons for the product at CVS! Stopped in there last night and they certainly had it for $34.99 a canister! If I want to continue using it, I will go there to get it rather than them hitting my C-Card for $119.00 every 60 days. Atleast I think that is what the paperwork says. It doesn't matter, every 30 or 60, because they're getting canceled.

Thanks for putting the effort into this blog! I was looking to try it.. but what caught my eye more than all else is the issue about the White Willow Bark. I had no idea that this is like aspirin, or having the same effect. I am highly allergic to aspirin, so in essence, you may have just saved my life! Thanks again!!!

  95. thanks for the great review. i think my hubby and i will go the smoothie route but will save our money and just make up something on my own. as you stressed, calorie cutting is good for weight loss so that's our overall focus. thanks again.

i've used rightsize and had great success with it... it does fill me up and i personally love the taste, at least of the flavors i've tried. i've looked at a lot of weight loss products and found most successful products and programs are expensive, and this one's pretty easy to use. i'd pass it on to just about anyone. i don't use it more than once a day, otherwise i do get hungry and end up eating more. careful with that free trial stuff though... if a commercial says free, usually it means its free to try and they charge you a lot later, you're better off just buying it outright.

  99. I wanted to let you know that I ordered the Right Size smoothie on trail before I read this blog. I was very excited about starting this product. I have a personal friend that has lost over 50 pounds using this product. I was also told that I was able to buy Right Size at a local store in Colorado for almost half the price. I received my trail yesterday. I was upset to find out that they only shipped one flavor when they stated pick two flavors. I understood I could only open one and I told them when ordering I wanted the coffee flavor. The sales person stated for me to pick another flavor so I said chocolate. I came to find out after calling customer service, they only will send you one flavor since you can only open one. I asked them to send me the coffee flavor since that is what I asked for, but then the person stated they cannot do that until they review the recorded phone call. He stated that reviewing the phone call could take 10 days.

This is very upsetting for a company that insures great customer service. All I wanted was to try the coffee flavor and they need to check to make sure I said that when ordering! WHAT????? I canceled my order first thing this morning and I will not be recommending this product at all! If they cannot treat customers right, then why buy their product!

I wish I would have read this blog before I bought in on this idea! Thanks for posting info from real people on your blog. It does help!

I totally agree that this is an unscrupulous company with a very questionable product. Even if the product was excellent, I would not do business with this company because of its unethical and underhanded marketing. IF RightSize has a viable product then it would NOT need to resort to the force-feeding "gotcha" tactics it uses to sting the consumer. RightSize will not be long-lived as long as there are people like you, Joe, along with the people who have taken the time to post their experiences here -- because the truth of their unscrupulous tactics will be unveiled!
    Thank you!

well, I have decided to start on right size tonight. I like to eat "light" anyway, but can't seem to shed these 10 pounds I carry. I never have time for breakfeast, so for me this seems like a great solution. I think part of the problem is some folks would like the smoothie to work, even without some type of exercise. I'm certainly not an expert, but when I have lost weight in the past (with light steady exercise) the pounds melted "off" but just sensible meals alone, never worked for me. You have to move to lose

Great information! Man do these infomercials almost hook you every time.

I was considering purchasing this product, but I am glad I ran across your blog. I now intend to try your recipes instead for a meal replacement and they all the ingredients are natural and much healthier. Thank you for your research.

I have been on Right Size smoothies for a week and every day have suffered a headache, culminating in a migraine-like event last night (while driving my kids). Searing head pain, with dizziness and nausea... don't know why this would happen, it's not like I have never encountered caffeine before, but today it ends. Thanks for your blog.

  108. Please go to your doctor and get checked out. The symptoms you reported could be from other things not related to Right Size Smoothie. For example, the symptoms you reported are possible signs of a heart attack or stroke. I don't want to alarm you and I am not a doctor but I would feel better if you got checked out. Take Right Size Smoothie to your doctor so he/she can look at the ingredients.

I am sooo glad I read your comments about these smoothies. There are so many products out there with ingredients that, unbeknownst to me, could interfere with the powerful blood thinner that I take. It's very time-consuming to try to look up everything that could possibly interact, so for the most part I just stay away from things that contain "supplements". The companies don't warn that their ingredients could interact with certain meds, which is frustrating. Thanks, Joe.

    Terrible customer service!

I'm glad they can't shoot you through the phone lines when you call to request a return authorization code.

What a nightmare I went through to cancel future shipments!

  112. I just ordered the Smoothies before I found your Blog. I have a hypothyroidism and take stuff for it, but with my busy day as a EMT I don't always get to make 3 meals so my thought was this was quick and easy in between thing to help with weight loss not necessarily as a meal replacement but a low cal supplement. Do you have any suggestions about what else would boost this. and do you know if any of the ingredients would counter effect taking thyroid medication?

THIS IS NOT AN ETHICAL ENTERPRISE. I ASKED FOR THEIR "FREE, MONEY-BACK TRIAL" AND INSTEAD HAVE BEEN CHARGED OVER $170 AFTER RECEIVING ONLY THE TWO ORIGINAL JARS, AND AM HAVING DIFFICULTY GETTING MY MONEY BACK. ADDITIONALLY, IT DOES NOT TASTE OR WORK ANY BETTER THAN THE STUFF AT THE GROCERY STORE, WHERE YOU CAN PAY WITH CASH AND NOT EXPOSE YOUR FINANCIAL INFORMATION TO POTENTIALLY UNETHICAL PERSONS. I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

I have no illusions about any weight loss product and am pretty skeptical of some of the outrageous marketing claims. I accidentally discovered Right Size shakes when I was at CVS looking for an appetite suppressant that was safe.

I personally do enjoy protein shakes as meal replacements because they are easy and because I drink so many, it's important to me that I get a "well rounded" meal that I will not get sick from or get so hungry that I then overeat all the wrong stuff.

I thoroughly enjoyed your unbiased review. It did not turn me away from the product as it did others, but it gave me the exact thing I was looking for: that this product would be safe for me.

I love your smoothie ideas and shall give them a try!
